「Infinite Realms」Zhuang Hongyi & Luo Lu Double Solo Exhibition

Text/Zhong Zhenying

One Flower, One World
Everything grows on the front line
"Infinite Realms" It is a moment when the world is perceived by human desires. In this exhibition full of the beauty of all things, Zhuang Hongyi and Luo Lu present in their respective ways the fleeting universe in their eyes, a world that is affectionate, vibrant, and confusing.

Zhuang Hongyi's paintings have a brilliant and fragile, light and heavy collision texture. Xuan paper is originally a light, thin, and soft object. Using Xuan paper to stack and shape a thick and colorful flower wall, the lightweight object becomes thick and heavy. However, from a conceptual perspective, paper is a lost wood, using the lost to condense the vitality of living things and making heavy things light. Like flowers but not flowers, like things but not things. The artist's paintings have a stunning impression of the grand world, a longing for the fleeting moments of youth, and a fleeting sense of crisis.

In contrast, the myriad phenomena in Luo Lu's works are born from the heart, each thread is a story, and each weaving is a hundred twists and turns. In the world, the body of an artist serves as a window, transforming it into colorful lines that are finely embedded in the canvas. From this, all emotions continue to regenerate, not like arrogant flowers, but like a journey of self healing in a vast world. This exhibition takes you to experience the beauty of everything, the beauty of people, instantly between a flower and a thread.

On the afternoon of October 28th at 16:00 pm, the Common Art Center presented the "Vientiane" Zhuang Hongyi and Luo Lu solo exhibition. This exhibition was hosted by Peng Feng and coordinated by curator Zhong Zhenying. The 'Universal Phenomenon' is a human perception of the universe and nature. The work breaks through regional boundaries and integrates cultures from all over the world, presenting a unique and rich intersection.

640-12.jpegExhibition Site

Zhuang Hongyi, through the infiltration of colors and the fusion of materials, takes nature as the theme, using colors to reshape vague memories into vibrant works, creating a sea of flowers one after another, each of which is a complete and fulfilling world, detailed, complex, and unique. Luo Lu was deeply influenced by earth art and Maori culture. Through the fusion and recombination of natural materials, he created works that were self soothing. This is the regeneration of the artist's emotions, as well as his exploration of human nature and love for life. The works of Zhuang Hongyi and Luo Lu are intertwined, conveying our exploration of life and reverence for nature. The exhibition will continue until November 24th.

CAC:You have named this exhibition 'The Universe'. Can you share with us the curatorial philosophy of this exhibition?

Mr. Zhong Zhenying, Curator

Zhong:When I received the curator invitation, I found it very special and interesting. Ten years ago, in early October 2013, as a curator in New York, I created an exhibition that I would never forget in my life. The curator's lyrics were "We Are So Close." Ten years later, at the end of October 2023, I returned to work as a curator at the Beijing Common Art Center, and it was really a great return, When I saw the works of Teacher Zhuang and Teacher Luo, not only did I have a positive view of the work, but he also expressed the relationship between time and space. Why use 'namely', which means arrival in time and space. It's like everyone gathered together to watch this work.

640-16.jpeg
640-17.jpegExhibition Site

At this moment, we are so close to this work, so "that" is a connection we have with the work. I believe that Teacher Zhuang expresses a lot of content. His work is not like a simple painting. It is a device or a sculpture, and only with this philosophical word can we express the full meaning of this work. Because between people and the work, distance and proximity, as if time and speed have been added, breaking through three-dimensional boundaries, being alone with the work, or appreciating it with family and friends, Can bring different feelings. This is what we are talking about in philosophy.

CAC:Can you combine your spatial design concept to share with everyone the advantages of Teacher Zhuang and Teacher Luo's works in improving the aesthetics or quality of life?

Zhong: I have been working in interior design for more than 20 years. From solving the relationship between space and living, I have now discovered that people need emotional and aesthetic values more. I have noticed that sometimes people are discussing the space I designed, not about decoration materials or how your house is like. The discussion is more about the unique features of the wall works and the sculptures and spaces next to them, and even the focus of discussion is often on the work itself.

640-20.jpeg

640-21.jpegExhibition Site

We travel to many countries, especially Europe, and live in the homes of local people. We can see middle-class and ordinary families, and there are many collections in the space that have been collected since childhood. From the collected works, we can see the entire life process, which has a very good storytelling. Teacher Zhuang's work makes me feel that there is a very good dialogue relationship in the space. So when it comes to a work in a space, I believe it is an important and irreplaceable necessity, not a non necessity.

Mr. Zhuang Hongyi, Artist

CAC:As an international artist, you have traveled to 12 countries around the world and have partnerships with over 20 galleries. Can you share the art ecology of different countries or do collectors from different countries have different feelings for you?

Zhuang: I went abroad in 1992 and have been there for over 30 years now. My art is mainly in the West, where exhibitions, sales, and theories were also established. I think it's mainly because the context is different, depending on whether we focus on culture or art. The Western market is increasingly moving towards art, with a focus on culture as the main direction.

640-22.jpeg

640.gifExhibition Site

The so-called culture is a work where you can see its story, such as illustrations, improvisation, pop art, etc. You can interpret it like reading a story, but this contemporary popular abstract art cannot be seen in the work. It takes one's imagination to get as much as one can according to one's own knowledge range, but this fact range exists, and everyone's context and approach are different. Therefore, I am highly valued abroad.

640-23.jpegExhibition Site

CAC:This exhibition is a double exhibition between you and your wife, Teacher Luo Lu. She was unable to attend the opening ceremony today. Could you please share Teacher Luo Lu's works with us.

Zhuang: This question is a bit difficult to answer because artists are very "personalized". I'm afraid I might explain it wrong and she'll come back and talk to me. The situation I understand is that her art is more influenced by the art of the earth and also by the local art of some Maori people, so when looking at her works, one should look down from a high position.

640-24.jpeg

This batch of works is brand new and experimental. And both of us have a characteristic of doing less habitual things. Teacher Luo Lu used to do something completely different because art itself requires doing things that she doesn't know to be interesting.

640-27.jpegExhibition Site

Otherwise, it is purely habitual. There is not much interest for us. So there are also two landscape paintings in my works, which are also experimental works.

Ms. Bao Yu, co-founder of Common Art Center

CAC:Could you please share how you and Teacher Zhuang met and reached a cooperation with Teacher Luo? What is the origin of this?

Bao: I met Teacher Zhuang and his family in 2007. During an interview with "Art Wave", we went to Teacher Zhuang's studio in Beijing. At that time, Teacher Luo's father, Uncle Luo, was managing the daily work of the studio. We kept in touch and also followed Teacher Zhuang and Teacher Luo Lu in real-time at international exhibitions and art fairs. After more than a decade of observation and research, we collaborated for the first time in 2021 on a solo exhibition called "Different Blossoms".

Their works range from the attributes of rice paper to artistic language, material presentation to painting techniques, as well as the evolution of their works over the past decade. Especially in the recent batch of new works, we feel a sense of Eastern Zen and seek emotional experiences through abstract forms. Just like the green artwork opposite me, there is a peach heart shape on one side, and this color change is a very exciting part of the artwork.

640-30.jpegExhibition Site

After our deep cooperation, I hope to feel more about the differences in creative methods and concepts between domestic and foreign artists. Zhuang Hongyi and Teacher Luo's persistent and stable inward exploration of cultural attributes and naturalistic perspectives on memory colors and "visual beauty" is the driving force for our gallery's continuous attention.

Common Art Center, 707-b03 Hongshi Square, No.2 Jiuxianqiao Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing, China

Founded in 2015, Common Art Center is the first contemporary art gallery with a crowdfunding membership system in China. The Common Art Center is jointly initiated by experienced curators, art dealers, collectors and other professionals in the field. It is committed to providing professional collection solutions for contemporary art collectors with a new business model. The gallery takes "paper" as the medium and works of media as its main research and management direction, because of the importance of such works in the Chinese art system and the broad development prospect in the future. Using paper and folk art as the medium, the excellent artists make paper as a tool to resist its fate, allowing it to get rid of the veil of function and reveal its own artistic value.
