In the World of Wine

Text/Peng Feng

Art and wine are inextricably linked. Du Fu has a poem called "The Song of the Eight Immortals in Drinking", which reads: "Li Bai wrote a hundred poems in a bucket, sleeping at a tavern in Chang'an City, but the emperor couldn't get on the boat when he called. He claimed that his ministers were immortals in drinking. Zhang Xu passed down three cups of grass, took off his hat and exposed his crown in front of the prince, waving his paper like smoke." Du Fu is a realist poet, and perhaps his poems are somewhat exaggerated, but they are not completely detached from the truth. The relationship between art and wine stems from the need for a certain state of art. Unlike Westerners who refer to the state of art as inspiration, Chinese people refer to it as inspiration.

Inspiration requires external gods, while pleasure comes from internal energy. Whether wine can attract gods is uncertain, but it can indeed stimulate people's inner energy. This largely stems from the liberating function of alcohol. Drinking slightly can help people forget various constraints and enter a natural state, which is precisely what art requires. Good artists are often able to break through individual limitations, gain greater energy from nature, and endow their works with deeper and broader meanings.

Wu Song is such an artist, and his paintings are completely a reflection of his life state. Wu Song likes drinking alcohol, which is largely due to his need for alcohol to help him find the state he needs for artistic creation. I have once explained Wu Song's paintings from a phenomenological perspective, and this interpretation can still help us understand his works today. The purpose of phenomenology is to return to things themselves, but things are always shrouded in utilitarianism, concepts, and purposes, and cannot show themselves. There may even be a situation where the more one wants to return to things themselves, the farther away they are from things themselves. The function of wine is reflected in its ability to transcend the limitations of utilitarianism, concepts, and purposes, and present things themselves that are not bound. At this point, the thing itself is also the self itself. Wu Song painted both a wine bottle and his self portrait.

People often say 'there is a universe in wine', which expresses the infinite potential of wine. However, wine does not express its potential in a very powerful way, but in an incompetent way. Art is also expressing its potential in an incompetent way. Whether it's wine or art, they are de empowering when they break free from the constraints of utility, concept, and purpose. What can be aimed at is not bravado, but potential, which is precisely why Wu Song's works are so thought-provoking.

The Common Art Center presented the "Wine in Wu Song's Works Exhibition" at 16:00 pm on October 6th, which was coordinated and presented by curator Peng Feng. There is heaven and earth in wine, and the bottle is a self portrait of Teacher Wu Song. In the eyes of ordinary people, it is the most ordinary wine bottle, but for Teacher Wu Song, it has become a source of inspiration for his creation and has given him unique charm. The exhibition will continue until October 26th.

Curator Mr. Peng Feng delivered a speech on site

Hello everyone, welcome to the Common Art Center on the last day of the National Day holiday to watch Professor Wu Song's exhibition. As a curator, thank you very much for coming. From a personal perspective, I particularly like Teacher Wu's paintings. When I first saw his paintings online, I was attracted by Teacher Wu's works solely through the pictures, because Teacher Wu's paintings are more in line with my aesthetic philosophy.

In today's world, we often see various popular art forms, including video art, installation art, and performance art, which have emerged in this era. However, Teacher Wu adheres to painting because he believes that only through painting can one truly convey one's inner emotions. I remember saying at the exhibition at Today's Art Museum that Teacher Wu's paintings express an indescribable sense of brilliance. This sense of interest is particularly important today. Due to the lack of such interest, humans may become mechanically intelligent and lose their humanity. Therefore, Teacher Wu's paintings have always maintained human dignity with his unique emotions.

Today, our popular images, installations, and behaviors combine various styles of new art in such an era background. Teacher Wu is determined to become an artist, he is a very unique individual. Although he may have the option to join other organizations, receive social support from various sources, and even apply for funding from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, he chose his own discipline. Therefore, I believe that Teacher Wu's works are closely related to his unique real-life situation.

Today, we should particularly support Teacher Wu because as an independent artist, his inner emotions are ultimately conveyed through his works, which is extremely precious. Everyone has their own emotions and perceptions, but not everyone can find a way to succeed. However, Teacher Wu Song found it and I really like his new work. I also hope that everyone can appreciate Teacher Wu's works like me, and once again, thank you all for coming.

Ms. Bao Yu, co-founder of the Common Art Center, delivered a speech on site

Our gallery has a particularly wonderful connection with Teacher Wu. After Teacher Peng introduced Teacher Wu Song's works to us for the first time, we liked them very much and asked for detailed research on Teacher Wu's materials. Afterwards, both of our shareholders recommended this artist to me. Teacher Wu is very compatible with our alcohol loving group, and our interpersonal and emotional relationships are intertwined, which quickly established trust like family members.

This Spring Festival, I specifically went to a new studio in Haikou to see my works. As an artist, he has been painting bottles for over 20 years, which is actually very difficult for artists. During our contact, we found that Teacher Wu is a particularly professional and occupational artist.

In fact, there are very few artists at this age who can still have such professional and professional ethics. We are also moved by this spirit, so we are particularly honored to be able to hold Professor Wu Song's exhibition on the last day of the holiday. Everyone can have a heartfelt experience in the "Wine". Thank you all.

Common Art Center, 707-b03 Hongshi Square, No.2 Jiuxianqiao Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing, China

Founded in 2015, Common Art Center is the first contemporary art gallery with a crowdfunding membership system in China. The Common Art Center is jointly initiated by experienced curators, art dealers, collectors and other professionals in the field. It is committed to providing professional collection solutions for contemporary art collectors with a new business model. The gallery takes "paper" as the medium and works of media as its main research and management direction, because of the importance of such works in the Chinese art system and the broad development prospect in the future. Using paper and folk art as the medium, the excellent artists make paper as a tool to resist its fate, allowing it to get rid of the veil of function and reveal its own artistic value.
