Preface
Curator / Li Yiwen
Yong Zhang's sculpture works are divided into two parts, one is free and the other is self-immediacy. Free, still indulgence; self, still stop. It is natural to be free, and it is a unique body also have social value. It is a body that has been carved and has social value. In Yong Zhang's works, the outside of the sculpture is his own body, which is exquisite and pleasing to the eyes. The interior of the sculpture is a free body, full of power, the real beauty of life. In this exhibition, we are lucky to see these free bodies with natural beauty.
Yong Zhang's artwork is between nature and sophistication, His previous sculptures feature shiny shells with rounded curves like a flawless metallic jade. Under the restrained and well-behaved posture, the sharp golden horn can hardly hide the humility of the small animal. It's hard to imagine that under such precision, it is a completely different body. The core of these sculptures is not an imaginary inorganic object with a blank meaning, but is hidden behind the artwork as a structure and foil, and they are far more wonderful than that.
Unsmooth edges and rough texture, the unbridled stacking of plastic clay forms fine and mixed lines, chaotic colors even obscure the lines of the sculpture. They're so mixed and organic, like restless points of light, like free lava. When they are detached from their own bodies, their well-behaved and rounded shapes have a pulse in an instant. With a sound, a low vibration came from the jumping, hot body.
It is difficult to not to be shaken by the beauty of this flaw, when we looking at these comfortable bodies. These sculptures are detached from the subtlety, but more brazenly declare the power of life, the language of life.

In this forum, in artist Yong Zhang’s vison, “Push the boundaries” It is a change in the material of the sculpture. Under the influence of diversified artistic trends, paying attention to the special expression of materials, the emotional expression of materials and the perspective of thinking has become one of the main trends in artistic creation. Paper clay, foam board are unconventional material characterized by its light weight and temporary nature. It’s contrary to the thick sense of contradiction of the original sculpture, which is Yong Zhang thinks of as " Push the boundaries”.
“Push the boundaries” for sculpture as same as used in interior Architect. Architect Daquan Wang usually uses sculpture to express different interior space ideas. Today, the choice of interior sculpture has long been no longer a purely personal preference. Its expression, material selection, volume and color and a series of elements together determine its visual effect in the indoor environment.
With the acceleration of urbanization, the external space of the urban commercial complex acts as a link between itself and the urban public space to become an important part of carrying urban outdoor consumption and entertainment.
Mr Zhao Jing, Deputy General Manager of Delta Center, believes that public sculpture and art installations, as an important part of the external space, can directly influence the user's experience of the space and the way they operate, which has a significant impact on the attractiveness of the space. Until now the “Push the boundaries” for the art of sculpture in our social life are full of vitality. It’s not only an accidental collision about traditional art with commercial manufacturing, but also means a new organic fusion.

Except for a few new works for Durian series in this exhibition, other of all works are accumulated by the artist over the past 10 years.
Yong Zhang who will try to create different shapes and find the most suitable materials to present this shape, from the traditional clay sculpture at the beginning, to the extensive use of " Polyfoam " for direct molding, and then to the use of foam, wood, stone and other materials.
Through the splicing of paper clay, the use of knife cutting and other means to present ideas, the "uncontrollable" foam itself is not as obedient as mud, it is precisely this attribute that allows artists to effectively avoid falling into the trap of premature indulgence in detail expression, and focus more on the shaping of "big" physical relationships.
In recent years, with the increase in the number of creations and the more mature use of materials, Yiyi gradually began to retain some relatively independent and established artistic language "inner models", abandoning the concept of treating them as durian series "inner models", but more to explore the relationship between "materiality" and "what I want" of the two materials themselves "foam" and "paper clay".
Because with this transformation, it is like opening a door for yourself, opening another space to explore and discuss. So, the "temporary" property of foam and paper clay has become a part for the artist to explore and discuss.
"The Essence of Life" is an artistic expression that Daniel Zhang has always cared about and enthusiastic about, and different periods have different perceptions of life, and it seems Daniel Zhang that it is a fortunate thing for an artist to be able to sincerely express this inexplicable state with his works.
Launching this exhibition at a special moment at the end of the year, I hope that everyone can feel the greatness of life, the power of life, and the beauty of life.
