Concordia Art Gallery presents "Let's grab a drink!"—a solo exhibition by artist Wu Song on December 14, 2025. The exhibition focuses on Wu Song's recent paintings and sculptures, using the cultural symbol of the Moutai liquor bottle as a thread to explore a visual meditation on everyday objects, gaze, and inner spirit. With Peng Feng serving as academic director and Fan Yi and Liu Lei co-curating, the exhibition aims to guide viewers to probe beyond surface appearances, delving into the rich emotional and philosophical dimensions beneath the ordinary.

Wu Song's artistic practice is consistently characterized by a composed observation and an exquisite transposition. Having lived in Hong Kong for an extended period, amidst the bustling streets of Lan Kwai Fong, he transforms the "sense of alienation" within the urban hustle into a driving force and perspective for creation. Under his brush, liquor bottles are no longer mere symbols of consumption but become vessels with independent life and emotion—sometimes like silent monuments, solidifying the weight of time; at other times, like tipsy dancers, swaying lightly amid colors and brushstrokes. This reconstruction and refinement of everyday objects reflect both a keen capture of contemporary life and an honest mirroring of his inner world. The exhibition runs until January 21, 2026.

Wu Song's creative journey is closely intertwined with his geographical transitions. Initially, he painted enormous wine bottles measuring one to two meters in height, reflecting his life in Hong Kong at the time. Later, upon returning to Haikou, where fewer people joined him for drinks, the wine bottles in his paintings became smaller. This shift in size mirrored his process of adapting from Hong Kong to Haikou. Today, he has settled comfortably into life in Haikou, and the emotions conveyed in his works have grown more expansive and joyful. Wu Song’s art blends the structured sensibility of printmaking with the vibrant colors of pop art and the textured expressiveness of expressionism. This sense of design is not imposed but naturally integrated into his paintings.

In recent years, he has extended his practice to sculpture. These sculptures maintain the visual tone and pop elements of his paintings while preserving the distinct material quality of sculptural language, creating a clear connection between his two-dimensional and three-dimensional works. His artistic philosophy is both simple and profound. When asked what he hopes viewers feel from his work, he replies, “Quite simply, to bring people joy.” This “joy” is not a superficial cheerfulness but an optimism and clarity forged through life’s ups and downs and tempered by time. It is this resilient, life-affirming brightness, conveyed through his art, that forms the most touching core of his work.

From my initial encounter with Mr. Wu Song's works, I sensed that they were far more than mere visual presentations. Within his paintings, there often lies a certain resonance—be it the affection shared among old friends or a touching moment in life—all of which quietly emerges through his brushstrokes and colors. I have always believed that truly great works of art should touch people's hearts. They need not flaunt their technique from an elevated position but should stand alongside us, accompanying us through every moment of life.

It is precisely for this reason that I feel immensely honored to have the opportunity to curate this exhibition for Mr. Wu Song.

First and foremost, I would like to extend my special thanks to all the friends who have joined us here today despite the cold weather. Just as the theme of Mr. Wu Song’s exhibition, “One Bottle,” suggests, I believe we all share a warm feeling in our hearts—because his works are truly moving and deeply resonant. I feel the same way; his paintings have always captivated me.As someone who also appreciates wine, I am especially grateful to Mr. Wu Song for bringing years of artistic dedication and emotional expression to Beijing, allowing us to experience and share in his creative journey.I’ll keep my remarks brief for now. Thank you all once again.

Congratulations on the successful completion of Wu Song’s exhibition. I also attended his first solo exhibition, which was held two years ago at the Concordia Art Gallery. I have known Wu Song for many years—we are old friends, close companions, and drinking buddies. Seeing him persistently paint wine bottles for so many years, with unceasing dedication, fills me with a sense of familiarity. Recently, the wine bottles in his paintings seem different from before—their dimensions appear more delicate, and his brushwork has become more refined and intricate, brimming with new meaning. I also extend my congratulations to Bao Yu, another old friend I have known for many years. Lastly, I sincerely thank all of you for taking time out of your busy schedules to be here today, especially those who have traveled all the way from Hainan. Thank you, everyone.

Wu Song is an instinctual artist—sincere with friends, and his paintings are equally compelling. One could say he is a truly authentic artist. Mr. Wu holds an exhibition about once every two years, and I have attended each one, always finding the works completely different from before. My first impression is that the volume of work remains substantial, reflecting Mr. Wu’s vital creative energy—always full and vigorous. Secondly, his works constantly explore new forms of expression, deeply engaging and marked by intense, rich colors, which undoubtedly connects to his training in expressionism and his background at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Thirdly, I believe the theme of "wine" runs consistently through his creations, serving as a driving force in his art. He drinks in daily life, and wine not only stimulates his impulse to paint but also acts as a medium connecting him with the spirit of the times and the audience—a fascinating aspect. In my view, through wine and his powerful painterly language, Wu Song has indeed contributed a remarkable chapter to contemporary Chinese painting.

Thanks to curator Fan Yi, Liu Lei, and artist Meng Luding for their contributions to the exhibition. Wu Song held a solo exhibition titled "In the World of Wine" at the Concordia Art Gallery in 2023. This time, he returns with new works centered on the theme of "wine and bottles," driven by his long-standing artistic obsession—painting a thousand wine bottles and capturing the subtle nuances and unique essence between bottle and bottle, wine and wine, and color and color. The exhibition also carries an underlying academic reflection: in a contemporary art context often perceived as detached and obscure, we attempt to explore an aesthetic of "relaxation." This is reflected both in the theme of the works—the openness and clarity symbolized by the essence of wine—and in the artist’s own creative approach. Wu Song is highly meticulous in his artistic practice, even overseeing the details of the exhibition layout himself. Yet, beyond art, he maintains a carefree and lighthearted demeanor.

This tension between control and release is akin to the balanced ease of body and mind after a light intoxication, suggesting an accessible, emotional path for contemporary art. Set against the first snow of late 2025, the exhibition hopes to convey a touch of warmth and relaxation through the spirited essence captured in the paintings. May Wu Song’s works resonate widely in this space, and we invite viewers to unwind and immerse themselves in the spirit of “Let’s grab a drink!”
